Private cremation

Your pet is the only animal in the cremation chamber. Afterward, all of their ashes are placed in an urn or keepsake box and returned to you. This is the right choice if you want to keep the ashes at home, bury them in the garden, or scatter them somewhere meaningful.

Communal cremation

Your pet is cremated together with other pets. Because the ashes can't be separated, none are returned. Many crematoriums scatter communal ashes respectfully on their own grounds. It's the lowest-cost option, and many families choose it.

Watch for "individual" or "partitioned"

Some providers use a middle option: several pets in the chamber at once, kept in separate sections. It costs less than private cremation, but you may not receive only your own pet's ashes. Always ask whether your pet will be alone in the chamber.

Common questions

How do I know I'm getting my own pet's ashes?

With private cremation, only your pet is in the chamber. Ask how your pet is tracked. Reputable crematoriums use an ID tag that stays with your pet from pickup to the return of the ashes.

Can I be there for the cremation?

Some crematoriums offer a witnessed cremation, where you can be present at the start. Ask when you call. It usually costs extra and is booked by appointment.

How long until I get the ashes back?

Usually about one to two weeks, depending on the crematorium's schedule and where you live.

What does 'individual' or 'partitioned' cremation mean?

Some providers cremate several pets at the same time in separate sections of the chamber. It's cheaper than private cremation, but some mixing of ashes is possible. Ask exactly what you're paying for.
